Deodorizing aqueous solutions of cationic acetonitrile derivatives (I) comprising treatment with a combination of a percarboxylic acid, a carboxylic acid and hydrogen peroxide, is new. Deodorizing aqueous solutions of cationic acetonitrile derivatives of formula (I) comprises treatment with a combination of a percarboxylic acid, a carboxylic acid and hydrogen peroxide: R1 = H, Me, 2-24C alkyl or alkenyl, substituted 2-24C alkyl or alkenyl with at least one substituent selected from Cl, Br, OH, NH2, CN, alkyl- or alkenylaryl with a 1-24C alkyl group, or substituted alkyl- or alkenylaryl with a 1-24C alkyl group and at least one ring substituent; R2 and R3 = cyanomethyl, 1-3C alkyl, 1-3C hydroxyalkyl or (CH2CH2)nH; n = 1-6; R4 and R5 = R1, R2 or R3; and X = an anion.
