The invention comprises compounds having the formula <FORM:0831853/IV (b)/1> where x is 0 or 1, y is 0 or 1, m is 1 or 2, n is 1 or 2, R1 and R2 are alkyl, and R3 and R4 are either both chlorine, or one is hydrogen and the other chlorine. These compounds may be prepared by chlorinating glycoluril or an alkyl-substituted glycoluril in an aqueous medium in the presence of an inorganic acid-binding alkali metal compound, such as a carbonate, bicarbonate, borate, silicate or hydroxide.ALSO:Bleaching compositions contain one or more compounds of the formula <FORM:0831853/IV(c)/1> where x is 0 or 1, y is 0 or 1, m is 1 or 2, n is 1 or 2, R1 and R2 are alkyl, and R3 and R4 are either both chlorine, or one is hydrogen and the other chlorine. The carrier may be solid or liquid, e.g. water, and there may also be present wetting agents, e.g. alkylarysulphonates and alkylaryl polyesther alcohols, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts such as the alkali metal carbonates, bicarbonates, silicates and phosphates, soaps, fillers, abrasives and water softening agents.
