An automatic lathe comprises a piston 12 operating a tool or a clamping-device, the piston being controlled through two pressure-fluid lines 14, 15, acting in opposite directions. A cam 19 on a shaft 20 moves a control-piston 17 to the left, to move the piston 12 attached to a toolslide 10 to the right until the slide abuts a depth-stop 11. The piston 17 also moves a piston 22 against the adjustable pressure of a spring 24 to operate a multiple switch 32. If fluid losses have occurred in the system, the switch is not actuated, so that, when a switch 35 is actuated by a cam 21 at the end of an operation, the circuit to the lathe-motor is interrupted and the machine stops. Warning lights 39, 40 are illuminated and pressure-losses can be made good by a hand-pump 42. The machine is also stopped and the lights illuminated if the toolslide meets an obstruction, the piston 22 then being moved an undue amount to actuate other contacts of the switch 32.
