1,191,927. Alkylation of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. MONSANTO CO. 25 May, 1967 [26 May. 1966], No. 24475/67. Heading C5E. Monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene and cumene, are alkylated with a straight chain alpha-olefin, preferably having 10 to 20 carbon atoms, or with a mixture of such alpha-olefins, in the presence of a hydrogen fluoride catalyst and a paraffin or cycle-paraffin having 4 to 32 carbon atoms preferably 5 to 15 carbon atoms or a mixture of such paraffins and/or cyclo-paraffins, the amount of paraffin or cycle-paraffin or a mixture thereof being at least 5% of the weight of the alpha olefin present and preferably at least equal to 50%. In one aspect of the invention the paraffin or cyclo-paraffin or mixture thereof is divided into two portions, one of which is mixed with at least a portion of the aromatic hydrocarbon and a catalyst, the second being mixed with the alpha-olefin and any remainder of the hydrocarbon and the two resulting mixtures are then mixed together. Examples show the alkylation of benzene. |
