A cathode thermoplastic composite material of use in a gas diffusion cathode of an electrochemical cell containing an electrolytic solution, said material comprising at least a three layer region of a hydrophilic layer, a hydrophobic layer, and an interfacial layer between said hydrophobic and hydrophilic layers; wherein (e) said hydrophilic layer comprises a hydrophilic formulation of a thermoplastic film containing particulate activated carbon and particulate non-activated carbon embedded therein in such relative amounts as to allow of effective permeation of said electrolytic solution through said hydrophilic layer; (t) said hydrophobic layer comprises a hydrophobic formulation of a thermoplastic film containing particulate activated carbon and particulate non-activated carbon embedded therein in such relative amounts as to not provide said hydrophobic formulation with sufficient voids as to prevent effective permeation of said electrolytic solution through said hydrophobic layer; and said interfacial layer comprises an intimate mix of said hydrophilic formulation and hydrophobic formulation, which intimate mix provides a continuum of bonding with said hydrophilic layer and said hydrophobic layer. |
