The specification relates to a transformed Salmonella bacterium for use as a chimeric carbohydrate production cell. The bacteria has, a lipooligosaccharide (LOS) or lipopolysaccaride (LPS) with a core region containing a terminal heptose, a DNA sequence containing an rfe gene and an isolated DNA sequence containing a lipooligosaccaride-synthesis gene G (lsgG) from Haemophilis influenzae where IsgG encodes LsgG. The process for the production of the H. influenzae-specific lipooligosaccaride is also claimed.
