PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a lamp having a limited crest factor and a long life. SOLUTION: In the metal halide lamp having a color temperature Tc between 3,900 K and 4,500 K and a general color rendering index Ra of 90 or more, an ionized metal halide filler contains calcium iodine CaI<SB>2</SB>of 30 to 50 mol%. The amount of the mol of Tl halides is between 3% and 10% of the total moles of the halides in the ionized filler, besides mercury. The lamp has the color temperature between 3,900 K and 4,500 K.
