PURPOSE: To coping with various temperature profiles and maintain low operation cost by using ordinary air instead of clean air. CONSTITUTION: In a continuous furnace in which firing region and slow cooling region(1) are installed along a workpiece return direction inside continuous furnace main body(2), the continuous comprises an indirect air cooling means in the slow cooling region in which a central part of the continuous furnace has higher cooling power than both sides of the continuous furnace in such a way that the indirect air cooling means is parallel to the return surface of workpiece (W), wherein the indirect air cooling means comprises an array of cooling pipes(5a) arranged on a central part of top wall(2b) of the continuous furnace main body, and box type coolers(6a) installed at both side parts of the top wall of the continuous furnace main body, wherein an axial direction of the cooling pipes is arranged along the workpiece return direction, and wherein a heating means(7) is installed on the bottom wall(2a) of the continuous furnace main body.
