A transparent oil-in-water gel emulsion composition comprises an oil phase, containing at least one lipophilic solvent; an aqueous phase; a non-ethoxylated fatty acid ester having an hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) of 11 - 16; and optionally polymeric thickener. The refractive indexes of the aqueous and oil phases are matched so that the emulsion is essentially transparent.
