<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine, having simplified smaller size construction for removing both particulate materials and nitrogen oxide contained in exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine such as a diesel engine. <P>SOLUTION: The exhaust emission control device comprises a cylindrical pipe 3 from one end of which exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine containing the particulate materials and nitrogen oxide is introduced, a center electrode 5 and a cylindrical electrode 4 provided in the cylindrical pipe 3 along its axial direction, and a switch 20 for selective switching operation between a direct current to be applied between the center electrode 5 and the cylindrical electrode 4 with the center electrode 5 as negative polarity and an alternating current applied to the center electrode 5. Corona discharge is generated by applying the direct current between the electrodes 4, 5, whereby the particulate materials are collected on the center electrode 5 and the nitrogen oxide material is converted into nitric acid. The center electrode is heated by applying the alternating current to the center electrode 5, whereby the collected particulate materials are burnt out. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
