<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulator low in loss with a simple configuration. <P>SOLUTION: A variable light attenuation function can be added by a simple structure produced by combining an optical modulator main body 4 with a polarization rotating element 21 and a polarizer 22.
