PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device in which fluctuations of illumination intensity on the original screen can be suppressed without reducing illumination efficiency in solving problems specific to the organic electroluminescent element, and to provide an image scanner using the same. SOLUTION: This is the illumination device having the organic electroluminescent element that comprises at least a positive electrode for injecting holes, a luminous layer having a light-emitting region, and a negative electrode for injecting electrons on a substrate. An auxiliary electrode having an electric resistance lower than that of the positive electrode is provided at least at a part of the positive electrode of the organic electroluminescent element.
