PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem where, since irregular bending points are generated depending on a writing style of characters written with continuous strokes when handwritten characters are written in the characters written with continuous strokes, bending positions of the characters can not correctly be detected to degrade character recognition accuracy. SOLUTION: This character recognition device is so structured that the starting point of a handwriting stroke is connected to the ending point thereof by virtual line segments, and thereby bending positions are forcibly generated in the handwritten characters. The device executes character recognition by detecting the amount of characteristics (positions, bending directions and bending angles) of both the bending positions by the virtual line segments and actually written bending positions to compare them with dictionary information.
