Process for recognizing a coating on a glass substrate comprises measuring the reflection of a light beam through the surface of the substrate being tested or a monolithic, laminated or multiple glazing unit, subsequently measuring on another surface, and comparing the results to decide whether the surface being tested is provided with a coating. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process comprising a switch for initializing the measurement, a measurement switch, a light source, a measuring window, a receiver, and two light emitting diodes.
