PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a scanner loaded on a carrier of an ink jet printer from ink mist. SOLUTION: An openable/closeable cover is provided on a reading unit of the scanner, and a shape-memory alloy is used for operating the cover. Heat generated from an LED used for illuminating the scanner is used for the difference in operation temperature of the shape-memory alloy. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
