摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an illumination optical system capable of performing bright and uniform illumination whose illumination efficiency is high though it is compact by providing an auxiliary light source part emitting luminous flux to a luminous flux low density part near the center of luminous flux emitted from a main light source part equipped with a reflector so that the luminous flux may be compensated, and to provide a projection display device using the illumination optical system. SOLUTION: The illumination optical system is equipped with the main light source part 1 equipped with the parabolic mirror reflector 12, the auxiliary light source part 2 emitting the luminous flux to the luminous flux low density part of the luminous flux emitted from the light source part 1 so that the luminous flux may be compensated, a deflection mirror 3, a first integrator part 4 uniformizing the light quantity distribution of the luminous flux from the light source part 1 by two fly-eye lenses 15 and 16, and a second integrator part 5 uniformizing the light quantity distribution of the luminous flux from the light source part 2 by a rod integrator 36.
