PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make correctable the deviation of writing positions of a light beam in the main scanning direction. SOLUTION: In order to form a test image on a target position on an image carrier 2 in the main scanning direction for each of the reflection surfaces 8a-8f of a rotary polygon mirror 7 identified by a reflection surface identification section 13, a light source section 4 is made to project a laser beam to each of the reflection surfaces 8a-8f in a defined time after detecting a synchronizing signal. Then, the defined time is corrected based on the deviation amount between the position of the inspection image detected by an image position detecting section 14 and the target position of the inspection image.
