PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and inexpensive device capable of securely detecting size in the direction of width of a sheet loaded on a paper feeding tray. SOLUTION: This sheet width detection device is provided with a slide volume 58 detecting the length in the direction of the width of a document by travel amount of a pair of side regulation members moving mutually in the interlocking operation by a rack 51 and a pinion 55. This detection device is constituted in such a way that the pinion 55 and a speed reduction pinion 56 are integrally formed at two steps and a rack 57 for detection connected with a slide lever 61 of the slide volume 60 is meshed with the speed reduction pinion 56 to support the rack 57 for detection by the slide lever 61. Consequently, travel amount of a detection lever can be reduced when compared with travel amount of the side regulation member, and a support structure of each rack can be simplified.
