Use of topiramate for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of sleep disordered breathing including sleep apnea or for the manufacture of a diagnostic device or composition for the diagnosis of sleep disordered breathing. Also disclosed is a protective patch comprising topiramate in an amount therapeutically effective in the treatment of sleep disordered breathing including sleep apnea and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for transdermal or transmucosal administration.
