PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air fuel ratio controller of an internal combustion engine which surely prevents a control system from being resonated and which can stably control when an air fuel ratio is controlled by using an adaptive control unit. SOLUTION: At an engine idling time, a rotational speed maintaining control for maintaining an engine rotational speed NE at a target rotational speed is performed. When the the speed maintaining control is performed, a gain coefficient matrix P of an updating speed of a model parameter is set to a matrix PID for controlling to maintain the rotational speed (S41, S42, and S45). Thus, the updating speed of the model parameter is set to a value larger than the case of a low load operating state for not performing the rotational speed maintaining control.
