The sheath(18) diameter is increased by creating a greater pressure on the inside(19) of the sheath than on the outside(20), thus enabling the barrel connector(3) to be inserted. The sheath is supplied as a tube(16) from which a given length is cut off. Expansion is achieved by sealing one end and is not more than10%. Sealing is effected at the free end and also back along the tube by pressing together the tube inner sides transverse to the length, preferably before cutting off a sheath length from the tube. The sheath is cut to length after mounting on the connector. A gas, preferably air is employed as the fluid medium both inside(19) and outside(20) the sheath(18). Gas pressure difference for increasing sheath diameter may be achieved by increasing pressure on the inside or by reducing pressure on the outside. The inner diameter of the sheath can be equal to or smaller than the outer diameter of the barrel connector(3). An Independent claim is included for equipment for applying an elastic sheath onto a barrel connector which has a sealing mechanism(9) for sealing the interior from the exterior at the free end and a system for producing a greater pressure inside the tube than outside. |
