A string of locking elements for a sliding clasp fastener comprises a filamentary length of material formed into a succession of transverse locking elements 1 and longitudinal spacing members, each locking element being generally in the shape of a U having limb portions, each two adjacent locking elements being joined by a spacing member bridging the ends of two limb portions of the locking elements, the spacing members and/or the limb portions of the locking elements being provided with deformations transversely of the string so as to facilitate guiding a slider along the string when operating a sliding clasp fastener incorporating the string. As shown in Fig. 1 the deformations are formed by bending the limb portions so that the ends of the limbs and the spacing members I are spaced from the surface of a carrier tape 4. In a modification of this construction the cross-section of each member 11 is made rectangular with the longitudinal dimensions at right angles to the surface of the tape 4. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the spacing members 112 are deformed so that they are of trapezoidal cross-section. In the construction shown in Fig. 4 the spacing members 113 are made of U-shape so that the base of the U of each portion is spaced from the surface of the tape 4. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 the spacing members 11 lie on top of the individual locking elements 1 and in the construction shown in Fig. 6 the locking elements 1 lie over the spacing members 11.
