A control device of the internal combustion engine having the valve system capable of changing the valve opening quantity of the intake valve comprises an air-fuel ratio determining means to determine whether or not the air-fuel ratio of the fuel mixture in each cylinder is rich or lean, a combustion state fluctuation detecting means to detect the fluctuation of the fuel combustion state, and a means to control the quantity of fuel to be fed to each cylinder based on the fluctuation of the combustion state and the result of determination of the air-fuel ratio determining means so as to reduce the fluctuation of the combustion state when the fluctuation of the combustion state detected by the combustion state fluctuation detecting means is larger than the permissible value.
