PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a short pulse optical amplifier which can be miniaturized even if an ordinary erbium fiber is used as an amplification fiber for amplifying short pulse light whose time width is the one in femtoseconds. SOLUTION: In the short pulse light amplifier 1A, short pulse light supplied from a short pulse light oscillator 11 passes through a single mode fiber 18 in a prescribed direction, passes through EDFD 19 in the prescribed direction, is reflected on FRM 23, passes through EDF 19 again in an opposite direction, and passes through the single mode fiber 18 again in the opposite direction. In the single mode fiber 18, the time width of short pulse light which is made incident from the short pulse light oscillator 11 is extended by group velocity dispersion based on a non-linear constant, and the time width of short pulse light which is made incident from EDF 19 is compressed by soliton compression based on an abnormal dispersion region.
