PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modem device which enables communication for both general telephone communication service and high-speed data communication service by connecting facsimile equipment (hereinafter FAX) for PSTN. SOLUTION: When an origination information detection part 21 detects origination from external PSTN FAX2 and a FAX signal detection part 20 detects a FAX transmit signal, a call control part 13 disconnects the high-speed data communication service in such a mode while an electronic load switching device 22 artificially holds the connection of the external PSTN FAX2, and then a line switching control part 16 switches the service to the general telephone communication service to perform originating operation according to origination information stored in a memory part 19; when a connection with a communication party is established, FAX data are transmitted through the general telephone communication service. Or a connection with the communication party is connected through the high-speed data communication service and the FAX data are transmitted through the high-speed data communication service by a low-compressibility encoding system switched to by a communication information encoding system switching part 15.
