PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-diagnosis method for a sensor capable of detecting whether or not the sensor itself is broken down. SOLUTION: The self-diagnosis method for the sensor is applied to a photoelectric sensor using apparatus having a light emitting device and a light receiving element. Output of the light receiving element of the photoelectric sensor is observed when a driving voltage of the light emitting device of the photoelectric sensor is changed from zero to a specific voltage level, and when the output changes a predetermined value or more, it is judged that the photoelectric sensor is operating normally. It is possible to use either one of a transmission type or a reflecting type as the sensor. By this, the self-diagnosis method for the sensor capable of positively detecting whether or not the sensor itself is broken down can be realized. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
