PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a catalyst for extending the molecular weight distribution and improving the melt tension, having a high catalyst activity and producing anα-olefin polymer having excellent high-speed moldability, high-speed drawability and production stability. SOLUTION: The catalyst for polymerizing theα-olefin is obtained by combining (A) a solid catalyst component consisting essentially of magnesium, titanium, a halogen and a butanedioic acid diester comprising a specific substituent directly bound through an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom to the main skeleton with (B) an organoaluminum compound and, as necessary, (C) a silicon compound or a diether compound.
