Automatic vending machine (1) for provision of goods or services communicates with a remote receiver module (10) via its own remote control module (7). The remote control module can be accessed by the remote receiver module to read at least one operating parameter relating to the vending machine. Access is via cable, optimally using the power supply cable to transmit data, over a telephone line or via a short range radio link. The invention also relates to a corresponding receiving unit for use with the inventive vending machine, e.g. a PDA, laptop, notebook or handheld computer, and a method for reading data from the vending machine by the remote receiver module.
