METHOD FOR PROCESSING DIAMONDS BY SELECTIVE OXIDIZATION

PURPOSE: A method for processing diamonds by selective oxidization is provided to solve the problems of conventional mechanical polishing methods such as difficulties in forming a hole, a projection and a groove having a desired shape in diamonds. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of: coating a metal layer(2) which is not oxidized at a high temperature of 700 deg.C or more on the surface of a diamond(1) to be processed; selectively removing a part of the metal layer(2) corresponding to a desired part of the diamond to be removed; heating the metal-coated diamond sample under ambient atmosphere or in a furnace capable of controlling partial oxygen pressure at a temperature of 700 deg.C or more to oxidize the desired part of the diamond contacted with oxygen and removing the part selectively to form a fine groove, hole or pattern; and removing the metal layer(2) applied on the diamond(1).
