The gravity brake has a cylindrical housing (10) with an opening (14) in the base (12) closed off by a valve plate (16) which is opened against the action of a compression spring (18) supported on a rib arrangement bridging the open side of the housing. The housing and rib arrangement are formed by a combined cast or pressed component, and the base is a separate part connected to the housing. The bottom is welded to the housing, screwed to it or connected by a press fit.
