Protective device for a storage space of a motor vehicle comprises at least one flexible flat body (5) movably mounted between a wound rest position and at least one at least partly extended functional position. The flat body is arranged on a winding shaft (11) rotatably mounted in a housing (3) and is guided through a housing opening (9) out of the housing. At least one clamping element (12) assigned to the flat body in a housing region (14) between the winding shaft and the housing opening is movably mounted between a clamping position fixing the flat body relative to the housing and a release position. Control devices (S) for the clamping element transfer the clamping element into the clamping position on determination of the functional position of the flat body. Preferred Features: The clamping element has a ratchet design and is spring-loaded in the clamping direction.
