A data processing device reads out data from a recording medium and write data onto the recording medium. This recording medium contains a first data stream concerning a video signal encoded by a first encoding processing. The data processing device includes a controller for acquiring first play list information for managing reproduction of the first data stream, a stream generation section for generating a second data stream obtained by encoding a video signal by a second encoding processing which is different from the first encoding processing, and a management section for generating second play list information for managing a reproduction sequence of the second data stream according to the second data stream and the first play list information.
