Apparatus determining the deterioration condition of exhaust gas catalyst (21) in an internal combustion engine exhaust has an electronic control (25) together with an oxygen sensor (23) directed at the catalyst (21) and having a zone (2) measuring the O2 partial pressure, the sensor (23) having a temperature-sensitive region (2,6) and being controllable from device (25) to give a temperature or, alternatively, oxygen partial pressure measurement. An Independent claim is also included for a process for determining the deterioration condition of exhaust gas catalyst (21) using the above apparatus, the process involving running the engine hot and measuring the electrical conductivity of conductive structure (2,6) of sensor (23) to give a first gas temperature which is compared to a second gas temperature.
