A mattress core (40) support system in the form of a padded tray with a rigi d bottom surface (60). The tray is comprised of four foam sides (20), providin g edge support for persons sitting on the edge of the mattress, and containing therein a mattress core (40). The system is compatible with (and sized for) all standard mattress cores, e.g., coil spring, foam, foam/coil composite, a nd all known sizes. The mattress avoids the need for flipping and the associate d increased cost of a two-sided mattress by including as its bottom member a rigid platform (60).
