The invention relates to a method for welding two workpieces (2, 3) along a weld seam (5) by using welding optics (4) during which a first workpiece (2) is pressed against a second workpiece (3) with the aid of a displaceable pressing element (7). The actual force exerted by the pressing element (7) onto the first workpiece (2) is measured in a process-accompanying manner. In order to achieve a high level of precision in the existence of a small installation space, the invention provides that a set force is predetermined in a fixed manner and in the event the actual force differs from the set force, the pressing element (7) is continuously displaced approximately perpendicular to the weld seam (5) so that the actual force corresponds to the set force. The welding optics (4) are displaced together with the pressing element (7). The invention also relates to a device (1) for carrying out this method.
