The end plate (1), for fuel cell systems, has a carrier (2) of an electrically conductive material, an electrode surface (3) for surface contact with an electrode (4) of the fuel cell, and an electrical line (5) to lead the output voltage from the end plate. The surface towards the electrode is coated at least partially with a material of a higher conductivity than the carrier material, linked to the output line. The carrier coating is applied by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or physical vapor deposition (PVD). The carrier is of graphite, conductive particles bonded in a polymer or a conductive polymer.
