A document management system (S) includes an IC chip (1), a document management device (2), and a document presence notification device (3). The IC chip (1) is a document identifier storage medium containing a document identifier for identifying a document so as to easily search a desired document. The document management device (2) has at least document identifier assignment means (202) for attaching the IC chip (1) to a document, document identifier storage means (204) for storing the document identifier stored in the IC chip (1) attached to the document, document identifier input means (205) for accepting input of the document identifier, and transmission means (206) for transmitting the document identifier which has been input. The document presence notification device (3) has at least document presence detection means (301) which is arranged on a file (F) as mobile document storage means for containing the document and detects presence of the IC chip (1) having the document identifier transmitted form the transmission means (206) of the document management device (2), thereby detecting the presence of the document having the IC chip (1), and document presence notification means (302) transmitting a document presence notification signal indicating the presence of the document.
