A gray scale image (22) representation method for transmitting a gray scale image from one computer unit to another in which the first computer unit is connected to a first store in which bit maps (12) with rastered print data for print/photo masters are filed, and where a bit map includes the print data for a print color. The first computer unit produces a further bit-map (15) with first resolution out of one bit-map (12) and transmits the further bit-map (15) to the second computer unit , the latter then producing a gray-scale image out of the further bit-map (15) for display on screen. The first computer unit produces a sectioned bit-map (17) which retains the first resolution and from which the second computer unit produces a gray-scale image (22) for display on screen.
