A method of counteracting the effects of variation in static pressure acting upon a hollow rotor blade 7 or hydrofoil, preferably for devices capable of extracting energy from a moving column of water, or other liquid, within which the rotor blade 7 or hydrofoil may either rotate, as in the case of an axial flow turbine, or may move vertically through the column such that cyclic pressure fluctuations are caused. Preferably pressure balancing control means upon the rotor blade 7 or hydrofoil, controls pressure equalisation by allowing filling of any voids in the rotor or hydrofoil with water, or any other substantially incompressible liquid, possibly controlling pressure by means of a diaphragm(25 fig. 6) or piston (33 fig. 7). The inside of the rotor blade or hydrofoil 6, 7, may be treated with anti-fouling and/or anti-corrosive coatings. The hollow construction of the rotor blade or hydrofoil 6, 7 may have separate filling and draining orifices 18, 20 and caps or plugs to contain the filling fluid and prevent ingress of the external fluid. |
