According to a prior art method for severing a glass rod (1; 21) during a drawing process, the glass rod (1; 21) is advanced in the direction of its longitudinal axis (2) whereby a specified rupture point (5) is produced on the outer surface (4) by a cutting tool, and the glass rod (1; 21) is subsequently severed by a force acting in the area of this specified rupture point (5). Building upon the prior art, the aim of the invention is to provide a method with which high-quality cut surfaces can be obtained while reducing cutting wastes. To this end, the invention provides that a bending device (6; 22) is fixed to the outer surface (4) and imparts a bending moment in the area of the specified rupture point (5) that is continuously increased until the glass rod (1; 21) ruptures. The invention also provides a simple and operationally reliable device for carrying out the inventive method. This device is characterized in that a cutting tool is provided that comprises a frame structure (7; 23), which at least partially surrounds the outer surface (4) and on which a bending device (6; 22) with a pressing body (8; 24) that can be moved in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis is held. The movement of the pressing body (8; 24) in the direction of the specified rupture point (5) is effected by a drive (9), which can be regulated or controlled and which is connected to the pressing body (8; 24) via a flexible line (10).
