PURPOSE: An optical disk device capable of recording or reproducing at high efficiency is provided to perform a high-efficiency recording process for data corresponding to one of the first and second standards according to the second standard data format higher than the first standard data format, and to enable a host to properly reproduce the recorded data regardless of a recording type. CONSTITUTION: A DVD decoder(6) decodes read data outputted from a front end processing circuit(2). An interface(7) controls a data exchanging with a host apparatus(9) connected through a connection terminal(8). A CD encoder(10) encodes data inputted through the interface(7) on the basis of a CD standard data format, and generates CD data in accordance with the data format. A DVD encoder(11) encodes the data inputted through the interface(7) on the basis of a DVD standard data format, and generates DVD data in accordance with the data format.
