PURPOSE: A vital information acquisition apparatus is provided to obtain accurately vital information by detecting correctly the notches of pulse wave of the cuff. CONSTITUTION: A vital information acquisition apparatus includes a cuff, a cuff-pressure controller, a cuff pulse wave detector, and a vital information determination unit. The cuff(12) is formed on a predetermined part of a living body. The cuff pressure controller(50) is operable to control the inflation pressure of the cuff. The cuff pulse wave detector(28) is operable to detect a cuff pulse wave as a pressure pulsation transmitted from the living body to the cuff. The vital information determination unit(52,54) is operable while the inflation pressure of the cuff is held at a value higher than a systolic blood pressure of the living body under the control of the cuff pressure controller. The vital information determination unit determines the vital information of the living subject by using a notch of the cuff pulse wave.
