Apparatus and method for use in the in-vivo measurement of fat content of a body

The method involves detecting a reflected beam with the use of a detector. The intensity of the detected beam in a selected wave band, which corresponds to a form of fat, is determined by analyzing the reflected beam using Fourier transform techniques. The determined intensity is compared with the reflective characteristics of a reference fat in the wave band to evaluate the fat content of body. The method involves applying a near-infrared (NIR) beam to a selected portion e.g. ear of a body such that a portion of the NIR beam is reflected. An independent claim is also included for a scanning apparatus.
