PURPOSE: A color cathode ray tube is provided to prevent deterioration of screen quality caused due to the difference of color purity at the end of the effective part. CONSTITUTION: A color cathode ray tube comprises a panel having an inner surface on which a phosphor screen is formed; a funnel coupled to the rear of the panel; an electron gun mounted in the neck part of the funnel, and which emits electron beams; and a shadow mask(7) having rectangular effective part(72) with a plurality of slots(77,79,80), and which is mounted in the panel. Each of slots has a vertical pitch and a horizontal pitch, and slots are arrayed into a plurality of vertical and horizontal columns. A first vertical pitch value(Pv') is set from the slot formed at the first horizontal column positioned at the end of the longer side of the effective part, to a slot(P') formed at the K-th horizontal column in the vertical axis direction. A second vertical pitch value(Pv) is set from the slot formed at the K-th horizontal column to a slot(P) formed at the center of the effective part. The first vertical pitch value is different from the second vertical pitch value.
