The inlet opening (13, 29) for water can be sealed at or close to the bottom end of the lance (4). The lance comprises an outer tube (5) and an inner tube (6), at least part of the inner tube being movable in an axial direction relative to the outer tube. Inlet and outlet openings (14, 28) for water are provided in the top and bottom ends of the lance. An Independent claim is also included for a soil removal method using this lance.
