832,869. Two-part couplings. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 27, 1958 [Feb. 6, 1957], No. 2688/58. Class 38 (1). The plug-and-socket members 24, 19 of a cable coupling are held in the engaged position by a sleeve member 15 which has part axial, part helical, slots making a bayonet joint type of connection with pins 31 on socket 19 and which press plug member 24 into socket member 19 through a sinusoidal leaf spring 40 in the form of a split ring. The pin-and-socket type contacts 21, 26 are held in rubber or like inserts and the end of plug member 24 is screwed to take a nut 17 which presses a sleeve 16 on to rubber grommet 52 so that the cable cores are gripped for sealing purposes by internal flanges 54 in passages through the grommet. During separation of the coupling sleeve 15 is turned to release the bayonet connection and pulled to bring flange 37 into contact with end 46 of nut 17 and thus pull out socket member 24. In a modification (Fig. 8, not shown), the helical bayonet slots are replaced by curved grooves on the inside of the sleeve member. The grooves are so shaped that initial rotation of the sleeve member, with the grooves engaging pins on the socket member, draws the plug- and-socket members together rapidly while rotation of the sleeve member, as it approaches the fully engaged position, draws the plug-andsocket members together more slowly but with greater force. |
