The procedure, for use with a multi-cylinder engine capable of operating on a lean fuel mixture and incorporating an exhaust gas purification system with two or more flows. each having at least one NOx accumulation catalyser, has a regeneration of the NOx initiated on a command from the engine based on detection of the condition of at least one of the catalysers, which operate at least partly in an overlapping mode of between 50 and 100 per cent. The recycling of the exhaust gases is asymmetrical, and during the NOx regeneration process a lambda variation is provided separately in each exhaust line (22, 22'). The engine, operating by spark ignition and direct fuel injection, or a Diesel engine, has the NOx regeneration actuated by its control system.
