PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting means of a fluorescent lamp capable of restraining attrition of an internal electrode and rise of tube wall temperature in the vicinity of the internal electrode, and of providing required luminance throughout the total length. SOLUTION: This method is used for lighting, by application of a periodical alternating voltage, the fluorescent lamp having: a glass tube 16 having a phosphor coating 15 formed on its inside wall surface and filled with a discharge medium containing at least a rare gas; a pair of internal electrodes 18a and 18b enclosed by leading out lead wire terminals 17a and 17b to both end sides of the glass tube 16; and an external electrode 19 formed on the outside peripheral surface of the glass tube 16. The method is characterized by that the low-voltage side of a power source 21 for generating the periodical alternating voltage is connected to the external electrode 19; the high-voltage side thereof is connected to the pair of internal electrodes 18a and 18b in a switchable manner; and the fluorescent lamp is lit by changing over the carried current in response to the integer periods of the alternating voltage.
