PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image forming apparatus in which interior of the apparatus and a sheet are protected against contamination by limiting the print area of a recording head within the range of the sheet thereby preventing useless recording operation in the image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: In an ink jet recorder, two recording heads 14a and 14b are mounted on a carriage 13 moving in the main scanning direction and ink is ejected from respective nozzle arrays. The carriage 13 has a sheet detection sensor 41 including a light emitting element and a light receiving element, and detects the range of a sheet 3 by reflected light therefrom. When each nozzle array deviates from the range of the sheet, image data is masked so that ink is not ejected from the nozzle array. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
