PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine a print start position of a recording medium effectively in a short time with high accuracy. SOLUTION: A detecting means is located on one end side in the moving direction and a recording medium is carried by a carrying means in a specified direction to a position where the detecting means detects the recording medium. As a state where the detecting means does not detect the recording medium, the detecting means is moved to the other end side opposite to the one end side until the recording medium is detected. When the detecting means detects the recording medium, the distance where the upper end on the other end side is preceding the upper end on the one end side is determined for the upper right and left ends of the recording medium based on the carrying distance of the recording medium required for the detecting means brought into a state not detecting the recording medium to detect the upper end of the recording medium again on the one end side, and a moving distance of the detecting means from the one end side to the position for detecting the recording medium, and then the recording medium is carried by an amount corresponding to the preceding distance.
